Hi guys,

I've done some research but was just wondering if anyone had any experience or knows of anyone who conceived after taking the anti TNF Humira.

I am 39, 40 in December and also due to marry in December and am desperate to try for a baby, however I was diagnosed with RA in November 2011 and have been trying different medications ever since to try and get the disease under contro(which at the moment it still isn't) l. I no longer take mxt due to a bad reaction, and havent done for over a month but did have my first humira injection last week. My intention was to get the disease under control and then hopefully come off the humira however on researching on the internet, it appears that you have to have stopped taking humira for at least 5 months before you try concieve and that it may affect fertility.

I just want to know whether anyone had any trouble conceivng after treatment and also if there are any success story's. Im in two minds as to whether to have my next injection I'm so confused with all the different drugs and side effects.

Thanks

Donna

Sorry I don't have any experience of Humira and pregnancy but I have been pregnant with RA so I thought I would share some experiences with you.

Do you have a rheumy nurse you can contact, if so I would give them a call and discuss your options. I was fortunate that the whole department was very supportive of my decision to try for another baby (already had one before I was diagnosed with RA) when my son was born I asked the nurses on the maternity ward to send a message to the rheumatology department to let them know (as they had asked me to do this) and one of the nurses even came to visit me in their lunch hour.

I was told by the consultant that usually when you get pregnant your RA symptoms get easier (as during pregnancy your immune system is lowered to stop you rejecting the baby) unfortunately I was the exception to the rule. I continued you take sulphasalazine through out my pregnancy. It isn't licensed but my consultant assured me it would be safe because lots of women do take it during pregnancy. Because of this I had to be under the care of an obstetrician but this was very reassuring and I loads of extra scans which was lovely. (by the way hydroxychloroquine is licensed for use during pregnancy but I couldn't tolerate it). They kept my RA under control with steroid injections (both intramuscular and into the joints). The steroid injections used are the ones that they routinely use during twin pregnancies to help mature the lungs as they are more prone to premature birth. So the only side effect on the baby is if they happen to be born prematurely they have a greater chance of survival (to me that was a win win situation).

I hope your rheumatology department as are supportive as mine were. I really think you need to give them a call and have a chat as soon as possible.

Take care and good luck with the wedding.

Hello

In America there are a number of women who have had babies on the humira
In fact there are women who are ttc here, without RA or similar on it privately, because there is some Research into some women having these killer cells which are to blame for non conception/early miscarriages

If you go on the forum part of www.butyoudontlooksick.com and ask about ttc on humira
Do give it a try.

The other thing is you can have a charcoal wash out treatment which will get shot of the ra toxic drugs faster.

All the best

Hello, I was 40 when I had my little miracle last November. I was on enbrel when I got pregnant and only stopped once I found out I was expected (c6weeks), as far as we know she is perfect. All the anti TNFs are different, but I was advised I could have carried on taking it throughout my pregnancy, but didn't as I was lucky and went into remission and didn't need to. About 3 months before I had my daughter I started back on sulphasalazine, then once she arrived I used infliximab as it was the only anti TNF that they know is safe for breast feeding (although others have been used with no ill effects). I needed to get my RA under control before I got pregnant, to do that I was on sulphasalzine, enbrel and oral steroids. Good luck with it all, Helen.

Helen

Thank you so much for writing your post. You have given me hope and for that I am truly thankful. I am due to see my consultant at the end of this month and plan to discuss my desire for a baby, but to be honest I think I had resigned myself to it not happening. As you say, I need to get my RA under control first.. I am currently taking Humira, Steroids, Celecoxib, Calcium and Hydroxychloriquine..... I have felt a little bit better over the past week, and am able to now use my fingers, although my wrists are still quite sore along with my neck, knee and foot. I am really hoping that the consultant gives me some positive advice on the 31st, and hope that like you I too can have a little miracle before its too late....

Thank you so much for putting a smile on my faceTongue

I wish you all the very best, I had given up hope when I found out I was pregnant (so much so that I feared it was the menopause!!), but concentrate on getting the RA controlled and relax, fingers crossed your miracle will come.
